about asa
I'm Asa Tilanus, a certified Mat Pilates instructor originally from Japan, now based in Margate, Kent. My introduction to Pilates was a bit different from the typical path of many instructors who come from dance or fitness backgrounds. My background is in art and design. However, I’ve always had a passion for movement, which led me to discover Pilates at the age of 12. Over the years, I tried various forms of exercise like running, yoga, and gym classes, but none captivated me as much as Pilates.
At a time when I was dealing with anxiety, poor sleep, and general sluggishness, I was also diagnosed with an autoimmune disorder. Traditional exercises only aggravated my condition, so I turned to Pilates more seriously, and it became my sanctuary. Pilates brought profound changes to my life—both physically and mentally. My anxiety lessened, gained mental clarity, and I noticed a significant improvement in my strength, flexibility, and posture. The mental clarity and confidence I gained were invaluable, and Pilates became a non-negotiable part of my routine because of how it positively impacted every other aspect of my life.
As my dedication to Pilates deepened, I realized that teaching it was the next logical step. I trained with BASI Pilates, which offers a rigorous and highly technical program that respects the traditional principles of Joseph Pilates while incorporating modern scientific insights. Now, as a certified instructor with an advanced BASI mat certification, I’m passionate about helping others experience the transformative effects of Pilates and supporting them on their own journeys to better health and well-being. Currently I have completed my Comprehensive education, a thorough education in Mat, Reformer, Wunda Chair and F2 System repertoire.
